Whims, Wishes And Wood - How To Choose Children's Bedroom Furniture

By Kris Russell

Children's bedroom furniture used to be something that was fairly straightforward to select - since there was simply so little choice it really didn't seem to matter what you chose. Today children are very much luckier, with some beautiful ranges available. But with choice come more difficult decisions, and you'll be anxious to make the right choice for your child. Bearing in mind issues such as cost, assembly and practicality will all be of importance.

Children's bedroom furniture now seems to come in one of three main flavours. There are those sets which are cheap and cheerful - with cost being the dominant factor. For those on a budget these can be lifesavers, but of course when it comes to looks, assembly and practicality they all tend to leave something to be desired. No one really wants their child to have the cheapest stuff, and often it only takes a little extra budget to be able to purchase much more sensible, and attractive furniture.

The second main category of children's bedroom furniture tends to be those which fall into the classical style. Classical bedroom furniture tends to be made from wood, and for children's bedrooms this is an appealing option for several reasons. Wooden furniture is easy to match, building and expanding the range of furniture over time if need be. Decorating it is easy, and should you have an older child, their furniture can be passed down to a younger sibling, regardless of gender.

The third and final main category is often the one your children will have spotted first! This is the type of furniture which has been marketed using your child's favourite cartoon or film characters, from LazyTown themed furniture to football oriented beds. These will certainly appeal to your child, and make a great looking bedroom quickly and easily. Available in a wide range for both girls and boys, these add style and colour to your child's bedroom.

When choosing children's bedroom furniture it will be important to consider the aspects which affect the way children use their rooms and their furniture. There are many differences between the functionality needed in a child's room compared to our own, and these needs will need to be borne in mind whilst making your selection. For instance, one of the important differences is in terms of size, with most children's bedrooms being much smaller than their parents' bedroom.

However, it isn't just this difference in size which is important. At the same time as bearing this in mind you will also need to consider the various ways in which their bedroom is to be used. For ourselves we may simply sleep and dress in ours, but children's bedrooms become private spaces, playrooms, somewhere to play with their friends, and even do schoolwork. From computers to televisions, bookcases to racing tracks, children's bedrooms have to be practical.

Although it may be tempting to choose furniture for your child that is entirely themed around LazyTown, what will you do in a couple of years' time when they have moved on from this? It may be that quality furniture of a practical nature is of more long term benefit. Certainly making sure you have storage space available will be of great importance. With room for their possessions, as well as room to play or relax, practicality is one of the key aspects of choosing bedroom furniture for children.

So if you're choosing bedroom furniture for children, it will be of chief importance to bear in mind the long term demands and practicalities of any items you select. Most furniture can be personalised in some way, but rather than just going for style, make sure you choose bedroom furniture which is practical and reliable. Security and safety will obviously be paramount, but thinking over the long term will save many headaches and complaints in the future. - 30224
