How Can a Job Teach a Teen Some of Life's Lessons?

By Levi Holden

What plans do youngsters come up with when they want to earn money? Often, a kid first tries selling lemonade, cookies, or something like that in their front yard. Even if they don't want it, people who pass by usually make a purchase to avoid hurting the child's feelings.

There are few real job opportunities for an enterprising 13 year old. Since most businesses will not hire a child so young, they have to resort to more traditional money making ventures such as babysitting or mowing lawns. Other common choices are tasks like delivering papers and walking the neighbor's dog.

If you are a young teen and need money, it is best if you try to find a job that will be fun as well as pay you some money. There will be time enough for serious jobs when you get older and you should have some fun now while you are young.

Once a teen is older they have more job possibilities. Some children may be cleverer and undertake a less conventional job - for instance, selling homemade cookies. Using your ambition and innovation will give you more ideas for work and perhaps improve your chances to succeed. Kids need a little support and direction to make their money making ideas a reality.

When kids turn 15 many of them start thinking about maybe getting a summer job to earn some spending money. After all, they know they will soon turn 16 and get their driver's license and many teens want to save up for that. If jobs are few and far between these next couple of years because of the bad economy, what will these teenagers do with their time? That is an impressionable age and they need to get started in life on the right foot and learn responsibility. Without a summer and part time jobs, these life lessons will be put on hold. - 30224
