Duke College Football Update

By Evan Minarch

David Cutcliffe made a sharp coaching choice by rapidly announcing Sunday that Thad Lewis would be his quarterback for this week's battle with the Kansas Jayhawks.

Although I have just one dilemma with the means Cutcliffe went about it. It chiefly is such a slight thing and I was reluctant to even mention it, although felt obligated to do so.

Cutcliffe stated Lewis was one of various athletes who had contracted the flu and sat out in practice time.

If you tell me Lewis is a hero, I am fine with this, principally because I don't have a say in the matter and you may care less what my opinion is. Although there is furthermore the fact that you are the head coach/qb sage and understand more than I will ever recognize regarding that position.

There's no need to tell me Lewis is not 100 percent.

He obviously said he didn't want to cause a quarterback debate, but, as most recognize, quarterback controversies nine times beyond ten are created by fans and news organizations, not personnel.

If a qb debate manifests as a result of Renfree's nice play and Lewis' not so good play then deal with it if the questions turn up.

While I agree with his choice and swiftness of it he may have opened up a small door for criticism of his starter.

If Lewis does not perform well at Kansas then Cutcliffe will surely be hit with questions about whether or not Lewis is 100 percent and if he is not, why isn't Renfree playing in the game?.

So for the coach's well being I hope Lewis steps up and is victorious or has a nice game, because the absolutely last issue Duke needs at the moment in the wake of the positive of defeating Army is a controversy.

Just ask Coach K if you're seeking a second opinion. He has had to deal with one or 2 of the type. - 30224
