Leashes Are For Dogs, Strollers Are Fore Babies

By Gail Mardew

If you have seen a lot of family-oriented movies you should have undoubtedly seen "Cheaper by the Dozen" which starred Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt. In the story the family with 12 kids had to relocate to a new neighborhood in the big city. The film devotes several minutes on the kids' adjustment period then starts showing new and rather odd things. An executive-looking woman, in full outfit and high heeled pumps, was running across the street and keeping a firm hand on a leash"tied around a running child, presumably hers.

It was a very funny scene but disturbing, one in which you can't seem to decide if you should laugh or not. But as a Steve Martin film a lot of audiences had let that pass. It is supposed to be a comedy film after all. And we know that a true and loving parent will never tie a leash on her child. If there is a need to take out the children for a bit of sunshine, parents will frequently use baby strollers and certainly not something as inhumane as a leash.

Funny that the clip had made me reflect a bit, that I am very thankful that I wasn't born a dog or that my mother and certainly most mothers I know would never do such a thing. We have to thank the geniuses behind baby strollers for making parents' and guardians' lives easier. Baby stroller make babysitting a lot easier to do.

In this modern time baby strollers have become even more indispensable for parents, especially those who have very demanding schedules yet would still like to have time for personal leisure time. It is important for them to be able to balance their time between work, personal and bonding time with their young kids.

For example, everybody needs exercise and parents can now do that while watching over toddlers through jog-along baby strollers. Both parent and child will surely enjoy the exhilaration of running together. But if a dog is a jogger's companion, either he will keep pulling at the leash to run the dog, or the dog will do the walking-slash-running. Both possibilities depend on the strength of the dog of course.

Most baby strollers now come with detachable seats that may be converted into car seats. Because of this children are able to safely ride a car and their guardians will have an easier time watching them while minding the road at the same time. If it were dogs riding in the car, they surely can't be forced to be strapped down securely. And by what, pray tell, a seat belt? By experience, any such attempt will not be easily taken by the dog who will probably prefer to jump off the car window. - 30224
